Comments from Her Excellency, Prof Marie R. Bashir, Governor of NSW
The book was launched by the Patron of the Foundation, Her Excellency, Prof Marie R. Bashir, Governor of NSW and the following is an extract from her speech at the launch.
“The authors have highlighted the problems faced by an emerging new specialty and the struggle to overcome some of those problems. The Skin and Cancer Foundation evolved out of that struggle.
Ken Paver became the Foundation’s first Chairman in 1978 and devoted the next ten years of his professional life to creating an independent and viable institution. We are indeed fortunate that Ken decided, following his retirement, to conduct interviews and record memoirs as a way of honouring some of the members of the group who had contributed to the Foundation’s beginnings. He enrolled the assistance of his life-long friend, Peter Pettit, as co-writer to draw together the narrative and memoirs which constitute this book.
Because of the high incidence of skin disorders, including skin cancers, the Foundation has made a most valuable contribution to research and the more effective management of these conditions.
Today, the Skin and Cancer Foundation Australia (SCFA) is a centre of excellence in dermatology and dermatopathology maintaining the highest standards in clinical practice, education, training and research. It is a registered charity and educational institution, completely self-funded and owns two sites at Darlinghurst and Westmead where it maintains its mission to serve the community through all activities related to the prevention and treatment of skin disease.
By reading this book, future generations of dermatologists may gain some insight into the problems and difficulties experienced in the early years of dermatology and the meticulous consideration and effort which went into the formation of the Skin and Cancer Foundation. They may also find useful ideas and strategies for solving new problems faced by dermatology in the future. Readers will also find in the memoirs a fascinating insight into the attitudes and values of the times. They will be able to appreciate the determination of these people to establish dermatology as a valued academic discipline. In particular, they will appreciate the foresight and dedication of Ken Paver and the others who created what Keith Manning called in his memoir, “the best thing that has happened to dermatology in Australia.”
