Contractions of facial muscles result in the expression lines evident on your face, otherwise known as wrinkles. To stop these contractions a muscle relaxant can be injected to block nerve impulses from signalling the muscle to contract.
Injections of muscle relaxants are used for treatment of vertical frown lines, glabellar lines (the lines between the eyebrows formed when you frown, squint or concentrate), horizontal forehead lines and lines radiating from the corners of the eyes (crow's feet). These injections can also be used for treatment of excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis).
Once a muscle relaxant is used, the improvement in the appearance of your wrinkles usually lasts for three to six months. Repeated injections are required to maintain the effect. With continued use, the effects may start to last longer.
